4104 ORAL
COMMUNICATION
Semester Credit 1/2 - Grades 9-12
Oral Communication is an introduction to ways people communicate. We will
explore various types of communication ranging from radio plays to
storytelling to music videos. Students will also make speeches, including
a speech using a Power Point presentation. Freshmen who successfully
complete this course first semester may enroll in Drama I second semester
with permission.
4113 DRAMA I
Semester Credit 1/2 - Grades 10-12 - Est. Fee $10
(Grade 9 with permission)
Drama I focuses on the creation of a believable production, concentrating
on the principles of stage movement, observation, and character and scene
analysis. Students are also exposed to the principles of play evaluation.
In this course, students will have the opportunity to participate in
improvisations, monologues, duet acting, and group presentations. In
addition, they will have the opportunity to be involved with the theater
productions onstage or off-stage.

ADVANCED DRAMA
Semester Credit 1/2 - Grades 10-12 Est. - Fee $10
Prerequisite: Drama I
Advanced Drama is a continuation and expansion of the principles and
techniques discussed in Drama I. In addition, we briefly study the various
epochs of theater, culminating in the production of a scene from
pre-modern theater. The course will also focus on a topic of interest to
the class ranging from directing to playwriting to children’s theater.
Students in this course participate in a public production. This course is
repeatable for additional credit. Repeaters will explore personal areas of
interest as well as participate in classroom activities.
4116 THEATER WORKSHOP
Semester Credit 1/2 - Grades 9-12 - Est. Fee: $10 (for supplies)
Theater Workshop will focus on the backstage aspects of theater ranging
from publicity and programs to set design and building. In addition, we
will explore topics such as creating props and costumes, and the
application of stage make-up. Students will be required to participate out
of class in the theater productions. This course is repeatable.
4757 PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGY
Year Credit 1 - Grade 10-12*
Tech Crew members will study the principles of sound reinforcement and
learn how to handle audio equipment for pre-scheduled performances and
school events throughout the year. They will be trained and qualified to
run lights and sound in the Southview Center for the Performing Arts for
school and community functions. Grades are based on class participation
and fulfillment of performance attendance requirements.
*No freshmen will be admitted to the class, and only seniors who have
previously completed one year of training may sign up for the class.

JOURNALISM I - WRITING
Semester Credit 1/2 - Grades 10-12
This course is designed to introduce and give practice to the student in
various types of newswriting: straight news, feature, editorial, reviews,
columns, sports. The course stresses the process of writing. Students are
taught interviewing, press conference and news gathering skills, as well
as basic proofreading and copyreading techniques. Student work, when
qualified, may be submitted to the student newspaper for publication.
This course is a prerequisite for Journalism II.
4134 JOURNALISM I
- DESIGN
Semester Credit 1/2 - Grades 10-12
Design introduces students to the new-media production process, including
newspaper and yearbook layout and design. The course also stresses the
role of computers in media production, as well as photography,
infographics, headline and cutline writing and design. Students will
produce a camera ready layout.
This course is a prerequisite for Journalism II and Yearbook.
4128 JOURNALISM II
Year Credit 1 - Grades 11-12
Prerequisites: 3.0 or higher in Journalism I - Writing & Journalism I -
Design
This class produces the official school newspaper, the Catalyst. Staff
members work in specialized assigned areas such as editing, copy, design,
photography, art, business and advertising. The work demands some time
beyond the regularly assigned publications period. Staff members are also
expected to sell a quota of advertising. Staff assignments are made
through application and appointment and students must maintain a 3.0 GPA
or higher to remain on staff.

4092 LIBRARY SKILLS
Semester Credit 1/4 - Grades 9-12
This is a work experience program which will introduce the student to
educational media and library skills. The student must be able to devote
one full period, five days a week, to be eligible for the program. This
may be taken on any grade level. Permission to enroll from Mrs. Fullhart
is required. The course may be repeated as often as the student wishes;
however, only 1/4 credit will be used toward graduation credit. In lieu of
a grade and graduation credit, this course may instead be taken for
volunteer hours.
